For a normal game of poker at home (6-10 players), it is recommended that you have a suitcase with 500 poker chips. For less than 6 players, you can use 300 chips, but remember that at some point you may want to invite more players or try rebuy tournaments.

Most chip sets now come with at least red, white, green, and black. Here is a simple and flexible chip value system commonly used in live poker tournaments: Red – $25. White – $100. Green – $500. Black – $1,000. Pink – $5,000. This distribution will work perfectly in most events with less than 30 people.

In any poker set the ‘base’ chip is the smallest chip denomination you will use. A typical base chip is a 25 point chip with a breakdown that has 25, 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 point chips in it.

This brings the total number of chips starting out on the table to 360 poker chips (36 X 10 players). As mentioned, players will often rebuy (sometimes many times) and players may be allowed to buy-in for more than 100 BB’s. This means we have to consider the extra poker chips needed for the game. The starting value of the chips on the table is $2000 (10 players X $200).

If you are hosting a poker event with up to 10 players, experts suggest that you have about 500 chips in three or four basic colors. In the event that you are hosting a larger game involving up to 30 people, a collection of 1,000 chips in four or five colors is recommended.

Give each player at least one of the largest chips. In the case of a $5,000.00 chip tournament, with the small blind starting at $100.00, it is recommend to give each player five $100.00 white chips, five $200.00 red chips, six $500.00 blue chips and one $1,000.00 black chip.

If you are running a faster freeze out so that you can get your tournament wrapped up in a few hours, each player might start with 5,000 chips with blinds of 25/50 in that first level. That setup gives each player 100 blinds to get things going.

Running your own poker party? Check out our guide. There are many sets of chips available to buy online, often they come with everything you need: a metal case, some cards, a dealer button and, of course, the chips. I wouldn't recommend getting less than 500 chips as they aren't that expensive and it's a pain to be making change all through the game.

And they all get the exact amount of tournament chips. Lets say $5,000 chips per player with the blinds starting at $25-$50. If there are 10 players you would usually pay out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If a player busts before a certain level you can allow rebuys or you cannot if you wish.
